How I tested the top Korean shampoos for dandruff?
I had a bit of dandruff issue recently so I tested these shampoos on my own hair and then rated them on a scale of 1-5 based on certain parameters that I’ve listed below.
- Dandruff Control Ability – I checked if there are ingredients in this shampoo (like tea tree oil or citrus or ketoconazole) that help control dandruff
- Cleansing Ability – I also noted how well the shampoo cleanses existing flakes of dandruff and debris on hair
- Gentleness on Hair – Most dandruff shampoos can get too harsh while cleansing hair so I checked if the shampoo was sulfate-free or gentle.

How To Choose A Korean Shampoo For Dandruff – A Buying Guide
If you’re looking to buy a Korean shampoo for dandruff, these reviews are not enough. Here are some other things you need to keep in mind.
Ingredients – The first thing you need to look for in a anti-dandruff Korean shampoo is the ingredients. Search for herbal ingredients like red ginseng, green tea, tea tree oil, ginger and citrus oil as these are all excellent at controlling dandruff and contain anti-inflammatory agents too.
Sulfates – While sulfates are a no-no usually, these super clarifying surfactants might actually help remove buildup and dandruff flakes from scalp. But be careful not to overuse a sulfate-based shampoo as it can lead to dryness. Also do not use such shampoos if you have color-treated hair as they fade hair color.
Hair Type and Texture – Most Korean shampoos are herbal in nature. So it suits different hair types. But if you have curly/coily hair texture you might need something more moisturizing so be careful to choose a shampoo that suits your requirement.
What Are The Best Shampoo Ingredients For Reducing Dandruff
Dandruff is a common and pesky problem that wreaks havoc on an otherwise healthy scalp. Many people feel defeated when they try to get rid of the pesky white flakes, but there are a few key ingredients that can help reduce dandruff and keep the scalp healthy and clean.
When it comes to Korean shampoos, you want to look for natural ingredients that are robust in antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. These are the good-guys fighting against the bad-guys, which in this case is the dandruff-causing pathogens.
Take tea-tree oil, for example—it’s an excellent dandruff-fighting ingredient often found in Korean shampoos. With its potent mix of antifungal benefits, tea-tree oil reduces skin inflammation and helps keep the scalp from producing excess oil.
Another great antibacterial and antifungal shampoo ingredient is rosemary, which helps hydrate the scalp, and heal any irritation caused by dandruff.
For a nourishing and moisturising boost, aloe vera is an excellent natural ingredient to look for in a shampoo. Many Korean shampoos feature aloe vera as a primary ingredient, to help soothe and regenerate the scalp, while improving circulation and hair health.
Along with these natural ingredients, many Korean dandruff shampoos also feature more traditional shampoos, such as zinc pyrithione and selenium sulfide.
Zinc pyrithione is an anti-dandruff agent that helps reduce fungi and bacteria, to reduce symptoms and scalp irritation. Selenium sulfide is another anti-dandruff ingredient that works to reduce sebum and oil production, leading to less itching, flaking, and irritation.
No matter what kind of dandruff shampoo you choose, you’ll want to look out for quality ingredients that work together to reduce scalp inflammation, reduce sebum and oil production, and fight off the bacteria and fungi that cause dandruff.
Daeng Gi Meo Ri Ki Gold Premium Shampoo
Best Korean Shampoo For Dandruff Overall
I first set my sights on this shampoo as it is an award-winning herbal shampoo from Korea, and it is voted as one of the best herbal shampoos too.
It is a mild shampoo that is free of artificial colors that left my scalp squeaky clean. So it’s great if you have oily scalp and colored hair.
I liked that it is made up of 33% or more pure medicinal herbal extract, including green tea, changpo, and ginseng, which is highly beneficial for your scalp.
I found that the shampoo increases the moisture in hair while eliminating dandruff and prevents hair fall since it is rich in Menthol.
It also has green tea which rich in antioxidants. So it helped in soothing my scalp from itching and irritation.
It nourishes and protects your scalp my dandruff, bacteria, fungus, and sun damage. It also has a mild oriental fragrance that left my hair feeling fresh
The only downside to this shampoo is that it contains sulfates. So I will not recommend using it if you have color-treated hair as it will definitely fade your hair dye.
How to use: Apply a moderate amount of shampoo on wet hair and create foams by softly massage using fingertips for scalp and palms for perfect hair and thoroughly rinse in lukewarm water.
Pros:
- Green tea an red ginseng help remove dandruff and cleanse scalp
- Contains ceramide that helps repair hair damage
- Good for oily hair and removing product buildup as it’s very clarifying
Cons:
- Contains SLES and SLS so it can strip hair color
My Ratings:
- Dandruff Control Ability – 4/5
- Cleansing Ability – 5/5
- Gentleness on Hair – 3/5
Somang Anti Dandruff Shampoo Korean Red Ginseng
Best Korean Shampoo For Dandruff And Dry Scalp
My friend recommended the Somang Korean Red Ginseng Shampoo to me to help eliminate dry and itchy skin on my scalp. It helps by maintaining the ph levels of your scalp and keeping it clean.
After I used it, it helped exfoliate my scalp and unclog the hair follicles, leaving my tresses squeaky clean hair. It also contains black sesame seeds, which is an active ingredient that moisturizes and nourishes your strands.
The best part about this shampoo is the Red Ginseng. Ginseng is an ingredient that is a holy grail for your scalp.
I also liked that it contains Saporin, an antibacterial compound derived from the Saponaria plant that prevents and eliminates dandruff. It acts on your scalp to prevent thinning and breakage as well as hair fall.
The shampoo also claims to increases the dermal cells, which in turn strengthens the roots of your hair. But to be honest I didn’t see much of this effect after using.
And now coming to sulfates! It does have them but they are of a milder form called ammonium laureth and lauryl sulfate and not SLES and SLS. So while it’s clarifying it won’t leave your hair as dry.
But I’d still be wary of using it on color treated hair!
How to use: Massage on wet hair and leave it for about 5 – 10 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
Pros:
- Contains Ammonium Laureth Sulfate which is slightly less harsher than regular SLS and SLES
- Red ginseng helps clean scalp thoroughly and reduces dandruff
- Antibacterial Saporin extracts help remove dandruff and prevent hair thinning
Cons:
- Might still strip hair color as there are milder surfactants
My Ratings:
- Dandruff Control Ability – 4.5/5
- Cleansing Ability – 4.5/5
- Gentleness on Hair – 3.5/5

LG Reen Yungo Shampoo
Best Korean Shampoo For Oily Hair
I was so used to washing my hair with shampoos, I wanted to try out a Korean scalp scaler or scalp wash like this one.
This Korean hair wash and treatment contains the goodness of traditional Korean herbs. It has a thick consistency and lathers to create a delicate foam that leaves your scalp squeaky clean and dandruff free.
I found it interesting that it contains Sophora herb that contains excellent hair growth properties.
It also contains Asarum, also known as wild ginger, which promotes hair growth. But I could only see its effects with at least a few weeks of continued usage.
This is a scalp elixir and conditioner in one tube, so I didn’t have to follow up with a separate conditioner after using this.
I have to forewarn you this is a VERY clarifying scalp scaler. So if you have a lot of flaky buildup on scalp or oiliness, this is a great product.
If not, it will dry out your hair in a single wash. So be careful to select something more nourishing like the Daeng Ki Ryo Gold Shampoo which has camellia oil if you have dry hair.
How to use: Apply to wet hair and scalp. Next, lather up and gently massage. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
Pros:
- Specifically created for clarifying scalp
- Needs only a little product to create a lot of foam
- Wild ginger helps control dandruff and flaking
Cons:
- Will dry out curly hair
- Very heavily perfumed and can be irritating
My Ratings:
- Dandruff Control Ability – 4.5/5
- Cleansing Ability – 4.5/5
- Gentleness on Hair – 4.5/5

FAQs About Korean Shampoos For Dandruff
How To Use Korean Shampoos For Dandruff For Best Results?
Using Korean shampoos for dandruff requires a consistent and effective routine to achieve the best results. Korean hair care products often focus on gentle cleansing and nourishing ingredients. Here’s how to use Korean shampoos for dandruff for optimal results:
Choose the Right Shampoo: Look for Korean shampoos specifically formulated for dandruff or scalp issues. These shampoos often contain ingredients like salicylic acid, tea tree oil, pyrithione zinc, or ketoconazole, which are effective in addressing dandruff and its underlying causes.
Frequency of Washing: Wash your hair regularly but not excessively. Over-washing can strip your scalp of its natural oils and exacerbate dandruff. Aim to shampoo every 2-3 days or as needed based on your hair’s condition.
Pre-Wash Routine:
Brush or Comb: Gently brush or comb your hair before washing to help remove any loose flakes or scales from the scalp.
Massage: Before wetting your hair, gently massage your scalp with your fingertips for a few minutes. This can help loosen dead skin cells and improve blood circulation.
Wet Hair: Thoroughly wet your hair with lukewarm water. Avoid using water that is too hot, as it can further dry out your scalp.
Shampoo Application:
Dilution (Optional): Some dandruff shampoos can be quite potent. If your scalp is sensitive, you can dilute the shampoo with a bit of water before applying it.
Application: Apply a small amount of the dandruff shampoo to your palms and gently massage it into your scalp. Focus on the roots and areas where you have dandruff.
Leave-In Time: Follow the instructions on the shampoo bottle for the recommended leave-in time. This typically ranges from 3 to 5 minutes.
Rinse Thoroughly: Rinse your hair thoroughly with lukewarm water. Make sure there is no shampoo residue left on your scalp.
Conditioning: Use a lightweight conditioner mainly on the lengths and ends of your hair, avoiding the scalp area. Conditioning helps keep your hair moisturized without adding excess weight to the roots.
Cool Rinse (Optional): Finish with a cool water rinse to help close the hair cuticles and promote shine.
Drying: Gently pat your hair with a towel to remove excess water. Avoid rubbing your hair vigorously, as this can lead to friction and potential scalp irritation. Let your hair air-dry or use a blow dryer on a cool setting.
Avoid Heavy Styling Products: Try to avoid heavy styling products that can build up on the scalp and worsen dandruff.
Consistency: For best results, use the dandruff shampoo consistently over a period of time. Dandruff may not disappear after the first wash, so give it a few weeks to see improvements.
Consult a Professional: If your dandruff persists or is severe, consider consulting a dermatologist or a healthcare professional for personalized advice and treatment recommendations.
Remember that everyone’s scalp is unique, so it might take some trial and error to find the best Korean dandruff shampoo and routine that works for you.
Korean beauty methods have been proven to be one of the best in the world. Their powerful ingredients go a long way in fixing dandruff issues.
If you haven’t found a solution to your dandruff troubles, you will find solace in these products, which will bring a positive change.
The key is to understand your hair type and choose the right products. They should help you cleanse your hair without overly drying out your scalp.
