How to choose the right shade of Korean lipstick?

You need to keep in mind the following factors before deciding to purchase any lipstick-

  • Remember one of the main purposes of wearing your lipstick is to prevent your lips from getting chapped. So find the shade that helps moisturize your sweet lips and make you feel comfortable the entire day.
  • What kind of finish you are hoping to achieve whether matte,or wet or shiny or glossy.
  • How long will it take to apply your lipstick and how long will it take for you to achieve this in the shortest time possible.
  • Although your lipstick may come in a fancy packaging, look out for ingredients used and whether they will provide you the best results.
  • Another important factor to consider is the skin tone for example wine and plum shade goes better with deep skin tones; rose, berry and cherry red go better with medium skin tones; nude, coral and pink go well with fair skin tones and so on.
  • You can also choose a shade depending on the shape of your lips. Use glossy shades for thin lips and use a lip pencil for asymmetrical lips
  • Use slightly darker shades for top heavy lips and for bottom heavy lips you can use a nude shade.

How To Apply Korean Lipsticks The Right Way

Applying Korean lipsticks can help you achieve a range of trendy and versatile looks, from gradient lips to full coverage. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to apply Korean lipsticks the right way:

  1. Prep Your Lips:
Start with a smooth canvas. Exfoliate your lips gently to remove any dead skin and apply a lip balm to moisturize. This step is crucial for a flawless finish.
  2. Choose Your Lipstick:
Korean lipsticks come in various textures, including matte, satin, and glossy. Choose the texture that suits your desired look. Matte lipsticks are long-lasting and provide a bold finish, while satin and glossy lipsticks offer a more natural or dewy appearance.
  3. Select the Right Shade:
Korean makeup often focuses on soft and natural shades. Opt for colors that complement your skin tone. Soft pinks, corals, and MLBB (My Lips But Better) shades are popular choices.
  4. Apply Lip Primer (Optional):
If you want your lipstick to last longer and prevent feathering, you can apply a lip primer before the lipstick. This step is particularly useful if you have fine lines around your lips.
  5. Define Your Lips (Optional):
Use a lip liner that matches your lipstick shade to define the edges of your lips. This step can help create a more precise and polished look.
  6. Apply Lipstick:
Start from the center of your lips and work your way outward. Korean makeup often emphasizes the gradient lip look. To achieve this, concentrate the lipstick color in the center of your lips and blend it outward using your fingertip or a lip brush. Alternatively, you can apply the lipstick evenly for full coverage.
  7. Blot and Layer (Optional):
For a more natural and matte finish, blot your lips with a tissue to remove excess product. Then, reapply a thin layer of lipstick.
  8. Highlight the Center (Optional):
To enhance the gradient effect, you can add a touch of a lighter or shimmery lipstick shade or lip gloss to the center of your lips. This creates a subtle ombre or dewy effect.
  9. Clean Up Edges (Optional):
If needed, use a concealer or makeup remover on a cotton swab to clean up any smudges or uneven lines around your lips for a polished finish.
  10. Set the Lipstick:
To make your lipstick last longer, you can lightly dust translucent setting powder over your lips or use a setting spray.

Remember that makeup is a form of self-expression, so feel free to experiment with different shades and techniques to find the Korean lipstick style that suits you best. Whether you prefer a soft and natural look or a bold statement lip, Korean lipsticks offer a wide range of options to achieve your desired effect.

Peripera Ink Airy Velvet Lipstick

After using this lipstick, I noticed that it provided my lips with a very soft, smooth and lightweight texture.

I also liked that it  is blended with a marshmallow root extract that adds a moisturizing layer to my lips.

Also, it comes in a very stylish packaging. I’m simply a sucker for that sort of thing. And the formula is also very smudge resistant and long-lasting.

It gave my lips an amazing velvety matte finish with no fine lines and no clumps. Yes, on a single swipe.

And do you want to know my secret? I sometimes use it on my cheeks too as a rogue.

I also give it extra points for having a high-pigmentation. You can soften the color or go bold or add a gradient layer.

I got the Dusty Rose shade, but you can choose from a variety of shades such as Warmy red, Orange cookie, Bestie Pink, Daily rose and Cinnamon chai tea.

My only issue? The long lasting formula and high intensity color payoff is the result of chemicals like silicone oils.

So if you have very sensitive lips, you might want to try a different brand like Etude House.

What I Liked:

  • Waterproof
  • Lasts longer
  • Floral & fruity scent
  • Suitable for all skin tones
  • Non-sticky
  • Smooth finish

What I Didn’t Like:

  • Contains harsh chemicals

My Ratings:

  • Color Payoff – 4.5/5
  • Moisturizing Properties – 4/5
  • Staying Power – 4/5

CLIO Rouge Heel Velvet

The next Korean lipstick I tried was the Clio Lipstick in Rouge Heel. I found that this is a very vibrant and luxurious velvet lipstick that helps give a fresh finish and softer touch on the lips.

It also kept my lips moisturised. I liked how the lovely matte finish will last you a long time.

My lips actually felt as soft as a rose with a creamy and rich texture.

It has a high chroma effect that gave my lips a natural and smooth,  crease-free look.

This chic packaging allows you to simply slip it into your purse. So get ready to receive some amazing compliments!

I really like this red shade as this lipstick is perfect to be worn on a date night or dinner party and is quick to grab a lot of attention.

Also I suggest applying it by starting at the center of the lips and then covering the corners.

What I Liked:

  • Stylish packaging
  • Leaves lips moisturised
  • No creases

What I Didn’t Like:

  • Slightly expensive
  • Color may fade

My Ratings:

  • Color Payoff – 4.5/5
  • Moisturizing Properties – 4/5
  • Staying Power – 3.5/5

Etude House Mood Matte Lipstick

Etude House is known for their incredible collection in lipsticks and glosses. So I simply had to try their lipstick!

On a single application, it not only provided my lips with a fine texture and colour but also with a matte finish that actually lasted an entire day.

It gave my lips a silky soft finish and soft focusing effect and stayed on for at least 9 hours. Yes, I was eating and drinking the entire time.

I really liked how it has a magnetic cap to help secure it and apply effortlessly. Certainly makes things easier!

Also, for a more gradient effect, you can apply the lipstick along your lip line or just gently dab it from the center of your lips.

It is a very soft and clean lipstick that can be used to fill in the curves or wrinkles of the lips.

My lip can get sensitive and dry during winters so I’m glad it has a lip nourishing formula that leaves the lips very tender and shiny.

What I Liked:

  • Smudge-proof
  • Lightweight
  • Suitable all skin types
  • Prevents dryness
  • Keeps lips moisturised

What I Didn’t Like:

  • Slight smell

My Ratings:

  • Color Payoff – 4/5
  • Moisturizing Properties – 4/5

Firstfly Crystal Jelly lipsticks

Okay, yes I confess. I just got this lipstick because it looks pretty. But I don’t regret it.

This product is a crystal jelly lipstick and comes with natural ingredients such as  vitamin E, cocoa butter, olive oil, aloe vera, beeswax, to moisturize and keeps lips hydrated.

The most fascinating feature is that the color will change according to lip temperature so everyone gets their own exclusive shade because of its magic color changing properties.

When you are cool, it stays brighter and when you are warm, it is stronger.

I found that these ingredients helped prevent my lips from cracking and gave the lipstick a pleasant smell. But the color? Meh. The payoff wasn’t that great.

If you want a fancy lip balm with a slight tint, this is great otherwise, not so much.

What I Liked:

  • Long-lasting
  • Moisturize the lips
  • Waterproof
  • Pleasant smell
  • Prevents chapped lips

What I Didn’t Like:

  • May dry soon

My Ratings:

  • Color Payoff – 3/5
  • Moisturizing Properties – 4/5
  • Staying Power – 4/5

Kailijumei Infused Flower Flame Lipstick

Yes, I bought another flower lipstick. No, I’m not sorry.

These Kailijumei floral lipsticks are unique, gold flaked jelly lipsticks that contain a tiny dried flower inside. And like the Firstfly ones they have a tendency to change colour depending on the lip temperature too.

I bought this pack of three lipsticks in shades Dream Purple, Barbie doll powder and Flame Red with each colour matching the flower color inside the lipstick. These lipsticks do have a better payoff than Firstfly but only by a slight margin.

They too contain ingredients like cocoa butter, grapeseed oil, lavender oil, candelilla resin, olive oil, that kept my lips soft and moisturized.

Also, I loved how each lipstick has a floral and sweet fruity scent and is presented in a signature red metallic tube. It comes with a cute mirror too.

I was surprised to see that it didn’t fade easily. The Barbie Doll lipstick gave my lips transparent pink color which has become a favorite!

What I Liked:

  • Helps keep lips moist
  • Natural looking shades
  • Real flowers inside
  • Provides hydration
  • Long-lasting

What I Didn’t Like:

  • May be too dry

My Ratings:

  • Color Payoff – 4/5
  • Moisturizing Properties – 4.5/5
  • Staying Power – 4/5

Holika Holika Heartfelt Melting Cream

I tried this lipstick as Holika Holika is a very popular makeup brand in South Korea and is known for its brilliant collection of matte finish lipsticks.

Most of their lipsticks are known for their non-sticky long wearing formula. I used the Heartfelt Shade that had a beautiful creamy texture that gives a lovely shine to my lips.

It was very lightweight and I used a lip pencil for the outline, so it didn’t bleed or smudge.

It is long-lasting and stayed on for at least 6-8 hours.

Another thing that made me fall in love with them is their iconic heart shaped design.

A lot of their shades are suitable for almost any skin tone and I adore their cute packaging too.

I just wish the lipstick had more natural ingredients and didn’t contain a lot of perfumes, as such ingredients tend to dry out lips. But hey, we can’t have everything.

What I Liked:

  • Adds shine
  • Long-lasting
  • Moisturised lips
  • Chiffon texture
  • Beautiful colours

What I Didn’t Like:

  • Contains alcohol and perfume

My Ratings:

  • Color Payoff – 4.5/5
  • Moisturizing Properties – 4/5
  • Staying Power – 4.5/5

BBIA Last lipstick Red Series

I love a good red lip! Who doesn’t? This one-of-a-kind Blooming beauty in Online Ocean (BBIA) lipstick series offers you long-lasting and vibrant shades of red in matte finish.

On application, I found that it  gives lips a nice smooth and velvety texture with good pigmentation.

Want my secret to a good red lip? You can start applying the lipstick from the center and gently spread it around.

I’ve also noticed a lot of celebrities and other makeup artists wearing BBIA lipsticks.

My favorite part is that it’s made from natural ingredients and provides a smooth finish and comfort the entire day.

And people with dry, sensitive lips like mine can use it without a hitch!

What I Liked:

  • Exceptional quality
  • Long-Lasting
  • Affordable pricing
  • Makes lips soft
  • Innovative texture
  • Transfer-resistant

What I Didn’t Like:

  • May not suit all skin tones

My Ratings:

  • Moisturizing Properties – 4/5
  • Staying Power – 4/5
